some movieclips

I uploaded some clips I made in Israel for you to see:

The show I saw from graduated high-school kids of the kibbutz school

When I was in Haifa I saw some cops who thought there was a bomb on the street.
It actually was just an abandonned backpack.
If you look carefully you can see a yellow robot in the background

When I was climbing the olive mountan suddenly the arabs started singing from the minnarets. The combination with all the jewish graves around me gave a really cool atmosphere

I believe this is the grave of Jesus, although I'm still not sure.
It was at the foot of the Olive mountan under the ground.
Lots of christians were praying at a thomb.

a regular night at our selfmade chill-out in the kibbutz

Back in Belgium + pictures

I'm back in Belgium.
The flight home went as planned although I didn't sleep the whole night.
I spent the whole weekend with my friends, mainly drinking beer, sitting in the bar and watching episodes of coupling.
I also already ate a shitload of Belgion food: Man we have great food!
And I just finished putting my pictures online.
you can find them on this adress: www.kano-urbain.be/israel
Take your time to watch them, because there are more than 700 pictures there.
Have fun with them

what has been going on

It has been a while since I last wrote something here, so here is an update:
Ein Gedi was beautifull. there were 2 canyons with 3 springs, lots of waterfalls, an almost unique vegetation.
And all of that in the midle of the desert!
I also swam in the dead see.
Honoustly I didn't like it that much, The water is really warm, you can't put your head under water, so It isn't really refreshing.
Also It hurts on places where you have scratches or wounds: I discovered many wounds and schratches that I didn't know of.
But it is ofcourse an experience, and it is really weird to flow around on the water.
You could just fall asleep lying on your back.
Unfortunately after Ein Gedi I had to go back home because I had a problem with my bank account.
When I arrived home after 3 busses I had just 4 shekel left (pretty close huh?).
Life in the kibbutz has become really lazy. We mostly just watch movies and go to the pool.
In the meantime Also Ramon the Mexican (aka captain Jack Sparrow) left the kibbutz.
But, we also have a new volunteer, the first new volunteer since the war started.
And unbelievable but true : he is a belgian!, and not only that, but he is Flemish!, and not only that, but he is from Ghent!
So the first Belgian I see in 3 months is from the same city as me, who would have expected that?
It was really weird to talk flemish at the kibbutz. the first day I was really struggling to speak it.
But by now I already got used to it again.
In the meantime my stay here in Israel is coming to an end, I don't really know how to feel about it: sad because I really enjoy my time here, or excited to see my friends back and especially to eat our wonderfull Belgian food again (een kleintje met stoverijsaus en nen bickyburger here I come!).
I have only 3 days of work left, after that I have 2 days of, and thursday we are leaving to the airport.
Yeas, you read it right, I said WE.
Roy and Kyle decided to come to europe and they booked their flights the same day as me but only one hour later, so I have my flight at 4 am and they have it on 5 am.
It's pretty cool to know that I won't have to wait for my plane by myself.
So Kyle And Roy are going to England, they are going to visit Nicky in Brighton for a few days.
After that Roy is going To Belgium to stay a while with me, and if kyle is able to arrange a visa he's coming over as well.
It's gonna be so cool to be in Europe with the 3 of us.
So mom and dad, start preparing your english.

Haifa and Jerusalem

I'm in Jerusalem for the moment.
I have staid in Haifa till this morning, found an amazing nice hostel with airconditionned rooms, lovely.
Saturday Lotem and Efrat picked me up and we drove to the Jordan near the sea of Galilei. I had an amazing time: just chilling and swimming. It was also great to spend a whole day with Lotem: I'm totally falling in love...
on sunday I walked around the city sightseeing: Haifa is definatly the most beautifull Israeli city I've seen so far.
Then I realised I hadn't been to the olive mountain in Jerusalem, so I took a bus and drove up here.
I saw the grave of Jezus, walked up the olive mountain, enjoyed the vieuw.
Tomorrow morning I'm gonna go to Ein Gedi which is an oasis by the dead see, It's supposed to be really beautifull.
Thursday I might meet up with Lotem in Eilat, she's going to spend a few days there.
It actually all depens on my financial situation wheter I go or not, cause travelling is pretty expensive: I already spent a lot of mony in the last few days.
pictures are coming up

travelling

I'm going to travel through Israel for a week.
My plan is: going to Haifa in an hour and then just following my nose.
I'm pretty excited to see where I will end up.
very small contribution today, but I have to go.
I have to take a shower and go up to the pool to say goodbye to Lotem my new kinda girlfriend (yeah Aimee and me broke up last friday).
I'll try to find a cybercafe to write my pics onto a cd so I can upload them.
Catch you on a flipside

exodus of the volunteers

It looks like we are going to be with 5 volunteers left for a long time.
Tuesday Mariana ( Mexico) left, se is going to study in France.
Next week also Nicky (UK) and Adam (Canada) are going back home.
This sucks, especially since Mariana and Adam were kinda my two steady travel partners: every trip I have made was together with them.
And because of this stinkin' war It doesn't look like there are any new volunteers coming soon.
So we will remain with 5 guys: Chin (Korea), Ramon (Mexico), Roy (USA) and Kyle (south Africa).
No Girls anymore...
I really hope this war is going to finish soon, because it really starts to annoy me.

We have had some rocket attacks again btw.
Yesterday around 11 am 5 rockets fell in our area, the closest about 10 minutes away, all hit the Gilboa.
And this evening the sirens of the kibbutz went off.
That was the first time ever I heard the sirens here on the kibbutz, normally nobody does the effort to put them on when rockets are coming.
So just to be sure we went to the bombshelter and played some tabletennis for a few minutes.
We heard the explosions, but they sounded pretty far away.
Tomorrow I'm going to Tel Aviv again, meet up with correen and her friend and have some fun.
That's it for today.

Ma'agan Michael

I don't really feel like saying much about my weekend in Tel Aviv last weekend since it's already a week ago and it's friggin' hot in here.
But I will write you something about what I did this weekend.
A litle explanation about how we ended up there:
Adam, the canadian volunteer, his sister arrived about 6 days ago in Kibbutz Ma'agan Michael to do Ulpan there for the next six months.
Ulpan is something like volunteering, but they only work for 4 hours a day and the other 4 hours they go to class to learn hebrew. It is not for free like volunteering, so they have to pay for their stay, although it is not that much.
Ma'agan Michael Is the biggest and richest kibbutz of the country: It Is located besides the beach, pretty close to Tel Aviv, between Haifa and Tel Aviv.
There are about 90 ulpanists there so that is really a lot, they even have like their own litle village!
This kibbutz is really like heaven on earth, the beach is gorgeous, there are so many international young people, It is really great.
There was supposed to be a welcoming party there for the new ulpanists, which we had been told is really kick ass every time.
But when we arrived they just had a rocket hit nearby which was the first time ever: It was the first time the rockets reached that far. The people there where pretty afraid.
So we met up with Adam's sister and went to the dining Hall (with a magnificent vieuw over the sea).
While we were eating the bomb sirens suddenly went off again, and to our big surprise almost everyone jumped up and rushed almost paniking to the downstairs.
What a difference with back home.
we just kinda laughed with them and finished our meals.
after that we heard one more explosion, but not as loud as the one last friday.
at night we heard that the party wouldn't take place because of the rockets, that's when we were totally shocked. What difference does it make if you are at a party or just sitting outside or even on your room: If a rocket falls on you you're fucked anyway.
apparently they are just totally not used to this up there.
So we went to "the Getto" which is a kind of a going out ally for the ulpanists: the people who live there are volunteers who have been there for several years, they just open their rooms and sell some alcohol, there are sofa's outside: so cool.
Most of the ulpanisists were there, so we chilled there all night talking with so many people from so many nationalities, what a night!
I even got to speak Flemish since there were some ulpanists from Holland too.
At around 5 am I went to sleep in a sofa outside of Adam's sister's room.
I woke up around 10 because of the heat, and then we chilled a bit.
The whole morning we could hear explosions somewhere far away, I think about 50 of them.
I still don't know where it came from, but I guess it must have been from the area around Haifa.
At about 2ish we got a taxi and headed home.
I really loved it there, it must be amazing to do Ulpan in that kibbutz.
who knows I might end up there one day, that would be great.
That's it for now, I'm going to see a movie and propably pass out while doing it.
Maybe a litle thing about Tel Aviv :
I had an awesome time there, we went out till the sun came up, met some great Israeli girls where we spent some times with: Adam even got kinda hooked up with one eventhough he has a girlfriend back home: the naughty boy ;-).
We also went to see Old Yaffo which is the oldest part of the city, even from before Jesus Christ, It was simply gorgeous! such a beautifull place white a great vieuw on the beach and the skyscrapers behind it.

that's it, I spoil you guys too much: 3 reports in a period of 4 days!
I guess you can give me some slack now if I don't write something for a while.

Katousja's part 2

As promised I give you the rest.
So when I heard that about the 5 rockets hitting the region around Afula I felt kinda strange.
I would have thought I would be Afraid with this news, but I still am not.
I actually felt more excited than I was being scared.
You have to realise that the rockets are far from accurate, that's also why they hit so close to the kibbutz, and also, for example: yesterday they fired about 200 rockets to Israel, and only 6 people died which made that day to have almost the most casualties in one day.
So 6 kills for about 200 rockets is not a lot, which also means that the chanse of getting killed by a rocket is also very small.
Anyway, So nothing happened after that friday till yesterday.
Yesterday I was working at the dining hall when Nadav came telling me that they got a message which told the people in the kibbutz to go to a safe place because rockets where on the way to our regions.
I first felt like going to a safer place as suggested, but I noticed nobody was there.
Everybody was still in the dininghall working and eating their meals, they didn't really give a shit about the message. They were all like : they are really not going to hit us, the chanse is so small, so why should we bother?
This is like the best example of the difference in attitude between here and home, really weird.
Back home everybody would be running to the shelters like crazy.
anyway, so I went back to work too, I felt kinda stubid hiding by myself and they did have a point.
So that they I heard 2 explosions, not as loud as last friday, so further away.
In the evening I heard they hit both Bet Shean and Afula, those are the 2 cities where our kibbutz is situated right in the midle off.
When Efrat and Lotem( two Israeli girls we hang out with once in a while) came around they told me they where shopping in Afula when they saw 2 rockets flying over their heads and hitting 2 blocks from them. they just kept on shopping...
So that's about the most important update on the rocket attacks the latest days.
I'll try to write about My Tel Aviv trip( which was absolutely awesome by the way) as soon as I can.
Now I have to get ready because we are going to Efrat's birthday party somewhere about 20 minutes from here.
Shalom y'all

Katousja's

since everyone keeps nagging about me not letting hear from me I write this post.
Since last Friday the Hizbollah started targeting Afula with their Katousja Rockets.
So last Friday after work we got packed and just left the kibbutz houze when we heard an explosion, about 30 seconds later we heard 2 more explosions, the last one being really loud.
Even the windows where shaking.
Although we didn't really feel much at ease we decided to continue.
At the busstop a taxidriver stopped and offered to drive us to Tel Aviv directly for 100 Shekels, which is really cheap.
We didn't hesitate and took the offer, also because we heard the explosions came from Afula where we had to take the bus.
As we where driving we saw smoke coming up from a field just after Kibbutz Gevah, so about 5 km from our kibbutz.
A bit later we saw smoke coming up on a hill just besides Afula.
Although the Taxi driver didn't think it were rockets we had the feeling it was.
And yes indeed, 10 minutes later we heard on the news that Hizbollah shot rockets to Afula.
Also one about 4 km from our kibbutz.
that's it for now because I really have to go now.
I,ll write the rest soon, promised.

Dining hall

Yep you read it right, no gardening but dining hall.
Yesterday I had my last day at the carpentry: this was my hapiest day since I arrived in Israel.
Today I started in the dining hall: what a difference.
Now I'm working in airconditioning together with 2 other volunteers: Adam and Roy.
It is really a great job.
Although, there is one catch: It is only for one week.
After that week I will be doing another job, but they are not sure which, propably it is going to be picking the dates in the datesfields: fine by me, as long as I don't have to go back to the carpentry.
Tonight there is another Reggeaparty in the kibbutz, so a good way to celebrate my promotion.
And if our hangover is not too bad tomorrow we are going to see the hot springs nearby.
The volunteertrip for this month is been cancelled because of the war, but instead we are going to a restaurant with the whole bunch: sounds like fun.
Now I'm going to the pool.

worried american parents and work problems

I have had some moving days the last days.
I'll just start with the beginning.
Gregg had reserved a spot in the gardening a few weaks before he came here.
I had done the same two months before I came, but apparently Tamar: the volunteer leader didn't receive my last E-mails, and that's how I ended up in the carpentry and he in the gardening.
A real pitty for me, a real luck for Gregg.
Anyway, A few days ago Gregg called his parents like they told him to do every week.
On the phone his parents told him They changed his planeticket and he was going home on wednesday.
I couldn't beleive my ears: they just changed his ticket without even asking or discussing it with him!
Ofcourse he was totally pissed(who could blame him).
I mean, if my parents would do that, no way on earth I would come back.
I felt really sad for him, having to leave after a weak is scandalous especially if you know it is perfectly safe in the kibbutz.
Why on earth would the Hezbollah send their rockets to an area with such a low population?
But aparently In Gevah other volunteers are leaving too because they have to from their parents, and yes especially the americans.
But with Gregg having to leave everybody thought I would be taking his place in the gardening, and so did I.
But then Tamar told me I was gonna stay in the carpentry because they didn't need anyone in the gardening but just made an exception because Gregg reserved the spot in advance.
This pissed me totally off And I spilled all my guts to Tamar.
I was even considering changing kibbutz.
Today I went to talk with Tamar, telling her that I was thinking of leaving the kibbutz.
She now said she was gonna talk with the boss of the gardening to see if he could give me a job.
She said I will propably move to the gardening in a matter of days.
So that is absolutely amazing news.
I will be so happy the day I leave the gardening, I got so tyred of that boring work.
Apparently you have to take a stand when you want to reach something here.

the war.
I told you before the rockets of the Hesbollah couldn't reach till here, apparently I and the Israelis where wrong about that.
Theire rockets can reach that far, and they have proven that by hitting Haifa and Tiberias.
Even last sunday a rocket landed close to Afula: This is the nearby city where we do our shoping once and a while, It's about 15 minutes with the bus.
But that rocket was ment to hit an army base between Afula and Haifa.
The rocket hit just an open fieled, so nobody got hurt.
This may seem bad to you, but remember that I'm still very safe here on the kibbutz.
The region here is too low populated to be interesting at all to the Hezbollah.
So not a chance they will try to hit us here: there are just too litle people over here, while the cities are much easier targets.

War

I guess you all saw or heard the news about what happened the last 2 days out here.
So I'll explain my position in this.
right now the Israelis are in heavy fights with the people of Hesbollah, just inside of Lebanon.
Many rockets have been launched from the Israelis to Lebanese targets, Also a few rockets have been launched from Lebanon to Israel.
They told me that we are at about 70 km from the Lebanese border, so that isn't really far.
However, the Lebanese rockets can't go that far, not even near.
So don't worry people I am still safe.
We are all ofcourse watching the news to know how it will develop, but I don't worry.
Israel has a very mighty army, so the chance that this war will get to where I am is very, I repeat: very, small.
People around here are pretty worryfree: "Dont worry, we are out of range".
I will keep you updated on this matter as soon something changes according to my safety.
So mom, don't worry, I am safe

Peace out (pretty ironically huh?)

James left, Gregg arived

Last sundaymorning James, the volunteer from Manchester, left the kibbutz.
Sad thing, cause I liked that guy pretty much, I'll miss him.
But yesterday Gregg, who was my roommate last year arrived.
It was really great to see him back.
We exchanged some memories, went to the new pub to have a drink, It kinda felt like we travelled trough time to last summer.

I'll remind you readers to it that you can comment on wathever I write on this blog(pretty cool huh),it doesn't even have to do with anything I write.
It feels kinda like I'm just talking to a blanc wall, which isn't really stimulating to keep on writing.

pictures

allright, I managed to get some pics online! It's only from my first days in Israel though, I hope to get the others online too in the future.
this is where I slept my first night in Tel Aviv: On the roof of a hostel.
This was the view I had from my rooftop. Sweet, Isn't it?
This was taken before the reggeaparty. On the picture you can see most of the volunteers of my kibbutz en some from Gevah, who came for the party.

The Latin-Americans dancing salsa during the preparty.

Others smoking and drinking.

That's it for now, I hope I can show you more pictures soon.

Jeruzalem

what a great weekend this was!
Finally we were with just 4 volunteers of ein harod and 2 from Geva.
But actually, I think that was just right to do wat we wanted to do : "follow James"(insider).
I don't really feel like writing everything we did, what we ate, who we talked to etc.
But I can Tell you Jerusalem is a city like I've never seen before.
We spend the whole night and day in the old city, walked around in the suq's and on top off the wals around the old city.
Jeruzalem is realy totally amazing. It is absolutely beautifull, there is a really strange atmosphere: hard to define.
We actuallly spent most of the time in The arab quarter, we even slept in the arab quarter.
The first evening we arrived in Jerusalem we got lost the first hour in the suq's : what a labyrinth, and pretty creepy at night.
We've been to the wailing wall, couldn't take pictures though since it was shabbat, also a very strange silent atmosphere there.
My impressions of the city are pretty hard to describe in words, but impressed I was.
Cool to see all those religions living together in the same city: one moment you hear the jews singing, a bit later you hear the arab singing from the minnarets and again a bit later you hear the church bells, very surreal, but... real.
A lot less cool to see, when you're on top of the surrounding walls, is the wall between Israel and Palestine in the distance.
I took a shitload of pictures, too bad I can't put them on the internet.

Sorry for my really chaotic report, but hell... Jerusalem is also a chaotic city.
Jerusalem blew my mind!

Pictures reggae party

My pictures that I took on the reggae party the first friday in the old pub are online.
A guy from the organisers asked for the pictures to put them online.
This is the url : http://psyhost.pic.co .il
I tryed to get my pictures online, but this computer doesn't recognize my camera.

work and shit problems

As I promised before I'll write a litle something about my work here.
Actually there isn't much to say about it.
the work sucks, I'm working in the carpentry for 9 hours a day, so I start at 7 and end work at 17h.
The good thing is that I don't have to work at fridays, so I have a 2 days weekend like back home.
But my god, It's so boring.
All I do is picking up wood that comes out of the machine and piling it up on a pallete: that's all I do all day long.
But if that isn't bad enough, there is no airconditioning in there, so it's sweating all day long.
I am also having diarhea for 4 days long now, not much fun.
today I went to work, but after an hour I started to get cramps again, I was so sick of it that I stoped work and went to the kibbutz clinic(something is should have done earlier I guess).
They told me to take som pills, have some rest and drink a lot of water.
So thats what I did.
It will propably seem like I'm not having much fun, but that's not the truth at all.
I'm having loads of fun here.
we do lots of things with all the volunteers together and that has been very great.
for example we went last tuesday to Kibbutz Geva( I stated it before as kubbutz Ein Gedi, that was wrong).
A mexican girl from that kibbutz was leaving, so they threw a goodbye party for here.
We planned to go back with the last bus, but since we were having such a great time we decided to stay and walk back home.
Eventually it turned out to be 3.30 when we got to bed. Not much sleep but it was surely worth it.
Gret news by the way: we ( all of the volunteers of Ein Harod and a few of Geva) are going to Jerusalem this Friday!
I'm so looking forward to finally see that famous city.
I'll let you know how the trip turned out after the weekend.
Please keep me updated about what is going on at home, because I hardly hear anything.

dinsdag, juni 27, 2006

what's going on

I really don't have much time, but because my family is being impatient I'll write a litle something down.
As I wrote last time there was a Reggea party fridaynight in the pub, and I had a blast.
Around six in the evening some volunteers from the nearby kibbutz Ein Gedi came by.
We Drank some cocktails an kinda started a pre-party, what a great atmosphere there was!
the latino's danced salsa, others where just drinking and laughing, we played "captain drunk"(I'll tell you later).
So you can imagine that by the time we went to the real party no one was totally sober anymore.
The party was very enjoyable too, the place was packed. I danced my ass of had some laughs with the other people and the Israelis etc.
I,ll keep it with that for today, because we have to leave, we're having a party in Ein Gedi.
I will try to update you all soon about my job and stuff.
Shalom

lazy day

I'm having a lazy day today.
I slept till 11 and did some wandering around while meeting people I know from last year.
In the dining hall I talked a bit with Nadav and he told me that Gregg, my roommate from last year, is coming back also in a few days. That was great news, I can't wait to meet up with him.
when i went to the zoo I talked a bit with Rafi, my former boss at the zoo, nothing really changed, he's still a very sweet man.
Oh yeah, I didn't tell about the big advantage about the small amount of volunteers: now everybody has his own room with 2 beds, so no more waking up because of the alarm clock of my roommate.
tonight there is a reggeaparty in the old pub, talking of a perfect timing to arrive here!
that's it for today.
do not be afraid to leave a comment y'all

I arrived

screw the english, I'm just going to write in dutch for now.

My blog

Hello all,
As you can see I created a blog to write about my stay in Israel.
I thought It would be easier for me to write everything in a blog instead of writing E-mails all the time.
Who knows I might even be able to put some pictures online too (this will depend on wheter the computers on the kibbutz are still in Hebrew or in English).
Please feel free to e-mail me during my stay, because it's allways nice to hear something from home.
Oh yeah, I decided to write in English here, so my friends I've made here last year could read it too.
I guess that's about it, the next thing you'll read here will be when I'm in Israel, so between the 21st of June and the 15th of September.
